Quartzsite, Arizona

Home video takes viewers to the Snowbird Capital of the West

By Chuck Woodbury

Quartzsite, Arizona is one of THE most popular RV snowbird destinations in the American Southwest. Every year, RVers from throughout the USA and Canada swarm here. They come to camp for free on government land or camp for seven months for less than a dollar a day. And they come for the giant, ongoing mineral shows, flea markets, and annual RV Show. Quartzsite is more than a place — it's an experience.

And, we must note, they come to escape the harsh winters of the North. Here, even in January, RVers commonly dress is shorts and tee-shirts, and an evening by the campfire under the stars is par for the course.

If you have ever wondered what Quartzsite is REALLY like, here is a way to find out in the comfort of your own home. "Quartzsite: Flight of the Snowbirds" is a delightful half-hour VHS home video that sums up what this unique community is all about. How can a little town of 2,000 permanent residents accommodate more than a million and half annual visitors, most in RVs? You'll learn why in this fascinating production.

The producers take you to the outskirts of Quartzsite, where hundreds of thousands of RVers hole up each winter on government land. They take you to all the

major swap meets and mineral shows, and tour most of the town's major attractions including eateries and RV parks. They take a few minutes to tell of Quartzsite's fascinating past, including it's "camel connection" with the U.S. Army. And they do a good job pointing out the popular recreational opportunities in the area.

There's good reason why Quartzsite is so popular with RVers, and this video shows why. After viewing it — and we must say that it's a very enjoyable half-hour of entertainment — you will either get the urge to visit, or at the very least have a better understanding of why this dusty spot in the Arizona desert is such a hugely popular destination for RVers.

"Quartzsite: The Flight of the Snowbirds" is $19.95.
